Task Packages

Safe Haven Curriculum Task Packages were created to provide teaching resources specific to the needs of refugee claimants learning English in the government of BC-funded Safe Haven Language Program. The Task Packages are aligned to the Safe Haven Language Curriculum Guiding Principles and reflect the Curriculum’s CLB 1-4 Core and CLB 4-6 Employment-Related language streams.

Each of the 16 available Task Packages is based on a real-world task that refugee claimants need to accomplish as they live and work in Canada while waiting for their hearing to become permanent residents of Canada. For example, Reading Work Permit Information, or Filling Out Medical Forms.

The task packages are aligned to the Canadian Language Benchmarks national standard for English ability, and the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) approach to classroom assessment. Each package contains dynamic, hands-on, communicative activities to engage learners and build language knowledge and skills toward completion of the real-world task. While not complete skill-building sequences, the task packages provide Safe Haven Instructors with an outline of criteria to be worked on as well as guidance for incorporating the Guiding Principles while planning and teaching toward the real-world task
